A notorious professor once said: “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things”. During a talk with the owners of Ultimate Software one sees both aspects in evidence. The men speak with flair and enthusiasm of the beauty of their profession and of their ambitions. But if you are that strong with an extraordinary product, you would think it shows its own merit. Nevertheless, Arne Deenekamp and Dirk Sijtsma decided to put the nature of their business and their brand values in the spotlight. New media releases with an honest message!
“As a child I already loved puzzles”, says Arne. To be creative and think in solutions is something that seems to have been spoon-fed to Arne. “I found it entertaining to make clever things and to construct something with whatever I had available. Making a cable car, for instance: literally thinking of a simple solution by trial and error”. Arne claims that the solution often lies in simplicity. This is precisely the case in the daily work at Ultimate Software. “Our challenge is in working for customers for whom we can provide added value. We understand their financial and logistical processes and the specialized legislation governing their business. In a short time we are able to link up all systems in use, but with customer-specific additions. That sort of thing requires dedication and inventiveness. So that they can excel and do what they are good at”.
Dirk, too, was already an eager inventor when he was very young. In 1988, he started recording how much gas the family was using with his cream-colored PC and floppy disks. “With endless patience, I developed programs. In time I turned out to be an expert advisor backed by my own self-implemented systems”. Dirk explains the opportunities for improvement in the shipping business. “For years I saw how data was being generated from old systems in the maritime world. They could hardly believe that it was possible to run everything on a single integrated system – while that is precisely what would put them in control. This trait of ours, of being able to reduce seemingly complex systems to a simple solution, is what makes me proud. This is what makes us unique”.
Arne and Dirk got to know each other very well a long time ago, while working together on a large project. Both men had already experienced how important it was to build up trust within a company. Both seem to have a wealth of experience in automating business processes: a perfect match for customers who wish to transform standard software packages into a tightly knit system.
“We like unconventional customers”, says Dirk. “You have to talk with people in order to find out what is really bothering them. Custom development is not out of fashion because every company has its own history and characteristics”.
“We are inspired workers with a feeling for technology”, says Arne. “Every day we strive to combine knowledge, creativity and a good measure of empathy. This is what we wish to show to our customers. By renewing our media releases we will give our visibility a new boost.”
Some people act as if they were proficient. But they are proficient; energized by technology, with a heart for people. If you are the captain of a ship, then Ultimate Software is your pilot of choice.

its operational focus it would have been much harder to supply the service Intels Nigeria is famous for.
